Set up high on the side of a hill, overlooking the Dordogne Valley, deep within South West rural France, Maisons la Boissiere is the ideal place from which to explore the surrounding area.
The owners, Stuart and Tish Inglis, who hail from Southern Africa, have imbued this wonderful spot with a mixture of old French and African touches, making it quite unique. They are on hand to make bookings for restaurants and attractions, arrange picnics, cook meals and offer advice on “off the beaten track” experiences.
La Vieille Grange, the biggest Gite is situated on the site of an ancient Perigordine barn. Beautifully rebuilt and restored, this honey-coloured stone house has three bedrooms, a large fully equipped kitchen and scullery, two bathrooms and a big open-plan living and dining room, ideal for a family of 6 or 7.
Outside, there is a further open-air eating area and the private garden leads off to the big swimming pool. Here guests return to relax after a morning’s activities.
You’ll find a choice of bikes to borrow so set off along the picturesque Dordogne valley, explore St Cyprien or Siorac – both are ancient riverside towns with fantastic medieval buildings, narrow pedestrian streets and good restaurants. Explore historic bastide villages and châteaux or canoe down the river and pause for a picnic on the banks under shady trees. Found in nearby caves are the origins of European mankind, paintings and dwellings to be visited. Welcome to the Valley of 1000 Chateaux!
